Native to southern Europe and Asia, introduced to northern Europe in the 16th century and later to North America. In the Victorian language of flowers, Sweet William symbolizes gallantry. The plant is widely used in borders, rock gardens and informal country cottage gardens. Its nectar attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. Scented.
To grow: Sow after last frost in loamy, slightly alkaline soil in sun to partial shade. It will bloom in second year. If sown early indoors it may flower in the first year. Deadhead to increase blooming period. Plants will self-seed. Grows to 24 cm. high.
