Perennial
This native flower has stands of dense spires of mostly bright blue flowers in spring. It will naturalize in a meadow or grow in a perennial border. Beloved by butterflies. The wild lupine was discovered in BC in 1825 and was offered to the American gardening public in an 1833 seed catalogue where it was described as “new and rare”.
To grow: Plants grow 2-4’ tall on sandy loam to very dry sandy soils. Will not grow in clay soils. Sow in fall for first bloom the following year. Cut the non-blue flowers before seeding to filter out errant color breaks and achieve a pure blue field.
