Leeks are a member of the onion family, and were probably grown in ancient Egypt. It is said the Roman emperor Nero consumed them to clear his voice prior to singing recitals. ‘Musselburgh’ was introduced in 1870, and was a very popular market variety. It is very hardy and overwinters well.
To grow: Leeks require a long growing season, sow indoors in February. Plant out the seedlings in April when they are 3-4 inches tall into 6” deep trenches. As they grow, gradually mound the soil around them, until they are hilled up.
